comic study (2018)

Class: ARCH 420 – Visual Communication and Graphic Expression (taught by Gary Paige)

The class was an opportunity to explore architectural representation through non-traditional forms of media like video, graphic novels, posters, and photography. In this particular assignment, we were tasked to re-imagine a previous studio project through the means of the graphic novel. We studied different styles (noir, manga, etc.) and chose one as a precedent for our re-imagination.

I chose to base mine off of a graphic novel called Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli because of its lighter (mostly duo-tone) color scheme and simple (yet with depth) drawing style. Ironically enough, it’s about an architect having a mid-life crisis.

Here is a re-imagining of my housing project as a chapter in the novel.

Methods: hand-drawn, scanned, then colorized in Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator.
